what are some possible treatments for vein disease?
so i just found out i have vein disease. idk if it’s a specific one but my doctor just told me vein disease. some of my valves aren’t working properly and my blood is running up and down the wrong vein on both legs i think :/ i guess making it a little difficult to go up to my heart. my legs looks perfectly fine right now though, i am a 24 year old female and i don’t have any noticeable varicose or spider veins (yet). since my mother and sister both have vein problems, and i believe my grandmother had them too i think my condition is hereditary as i do not smoke, nor am i overweight. i admit i somewhat lazy but i do walk a lot and exercise (not as much as i should though, working on that). anyways i just wanted to know if exercising more will help out my situation. i do know that they could never be "cured" so i’m trying to avoid any surgical procedure as possible. all my doctor gave me was compression stockings, and they actually do feel pretty good. my doctor said i might need a surgical procedure though but sometime in the next couple of years if i experience any other symptoms like swollen legs and stuff like that, and esp. if i decide to have kids. i haven’t told my mom about this yet since i know she has varicose veins herself and has had them removed (she is in her 50′s), i’m thinking of telling her in the future if i ever do need some type of surgery… what do you guys think?? do you think this is a dangerous disease? my doctor said i shouldn’t worry right now though… but idk i am such a worry wart and hypochondriac. i am just gonna wear my stockings and exercise for now… ugh

Charles asks…
Is it possible to get rid of tiny spider veins on my face?
I’m prone to spider veins on my face for some reason and am looking for a way of getting rid of them.
I had a small one on my face before but it just disappeared after a year or so. Recently a slightly bigger one appeared under my left eye and is always making me feel self conscious, does anyone know a way of getting rid of them without lasers? Maybe a cream that actually works or some home remedies?
The vein is quite tiny but worried it’s gonna stay there my whole life!
I’m only 18 and am very active so not sure why I’ve got it but I could really do with it disappearing as it would completely boost my confidence because I keep worrying about it!

Helen asks…
How do you get rid of spider veins on the face?
I have a bunch of spider veins that seem to be accumulating on my face. I already looked it up and saw that I have them because sun exposure to fair skin, but the only ways I saw to treat them was surgery or having a doctor inject them with a chemical.
I’m only 19 and not made of money. I usually just use cover up, but it seems like I’m starting to get more of them and it’s not working as well. Is there a reasonably affordable way to get rid of them, or even just make them less visible? or am I stuck layering on the cover up until I win the lottery?

rob answers:
It is estimated that almost three-quarters of all adult women have spider veins – red, blue or purple thread-like lines just under the skin. The condition is associated with increased pressure to the veins.
Since the most common causes are the normal monthly hormonal fluctuations of the female cycle and pregnancy, spider veins occur most often in women, and they often first appear during pregnancy. Other contributing factors include injuries, medications that affect hormones, and a family history of spider veins. Although it is less common, men can develop spider veins as well. The condition usually appears after age 30, although it can sometimes develop as early as the teen years.
Spider veins, or “starbursts,” are so named because the series of veins often radiates out from a central point, reminiscent of the shape of a spider. They may also appear as fine, separate lines, a web-like maze, or as “branches” from a single “tree trunk.” They can develop on any part of the body, including the face, but most often appear on the thighs, calves, or ankles.
Spider veins are caused by abnormal blood flow and weakening of the blood vessel wall in the affected veins. Any condition or activity that puts pressure on the veins — such as gaining weight, and sitting or standing for long periods of time — can contribute to their development.
While unsightliness is the most common reason for removal, spider veins may also be removed to alleviate problems with restless legs, aching, burning, and/or cramps. Spider veins are most often treated with sclerotherapy, in which a saline or chemical solution that is injected into the vein, irritating the lining and causing the vein to collapse and disappear.
In some cases, laser treatment may be used either alone or in combination with sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy Process
Your doctor may recommend that you avoid aspirin and alcohol, as well as herbal medications and anti-inflammatory medications, for two weeks prior to your treatment to minimize bleeding during the procedure. On the day of your treatment you will be asked not to use moisturizers, sunblock or oil on the affected area. You should wear shorts or other comfortable clothing that exposes the spider veins.
Your doctor will apply antiseptic to the area, then inject a solution into the affected veins with a very fine needle. Each injection covers about one inch of the vein. During the procedure, you may feel a slight pinch as the needle is inserted and a burning sensation as the solution is injected. Next, cotton dressing and compression tape will be applied to the area. After one area is injected and taped, the doctor will proceed to the next area.
Generally a second treatment will be required in order to complete the collapse of the vein. If you have many veins requiring treatment, multiple sessions may be required.

Sharon asks…
Can you use something to make spider veins go away?
Ok… Since I was little Ive had these annoying little spider veins on my face, I mean ppl say they are hard to notice but whenever i look in the mirror close up I can see them and it really bothers me always has, so i was wondering if anyone knew of some type of cream i could use to get rid of them or atleast fade them? Thanks so much for replys I really appreciate all of the help ![]()

rob answers:
Yours is just closer to the skin than most. I would just put some cover up over them if I was you. Don’t know of any creams to get rid of them. Only a Vascular Doctor can tell you what needs to be done. I believe they can take a small needle and inject something into them that will make them vanish. Good luck.

Your Questions About Spider Veins

Sandy asks…
What’s a natural way to get rid of spider veins?
I don’t think spider veins are ever entirely “gotten rid of,” unless laser is involved, but I’d like to know of natural ways I can diminish the appearance of these spider veins. I don’t have very bad spider veins, but they aggravate me because I pay attention to them; no one else would, but I do, and it’s just aggravating to me.
Thanks in advance!

rob answers:
I don’t know about you, but when I hear “spider veins” I think of, well, spiders. And spider legs. Really, really long spider legs, creepy crawling their way up my legs. Until I run out of the room screaming like a little girl and hide under the covers. Yuck. Luckily for me, this topic actually has nothing to do with spiders, just spider veins, which are actually milder and smaller versions of varicose veins, which we all know about (I think).
Spider veins, and varicose (from the latin root varix, which means twisted) veins, are veins that have become swollen and twisted from weakened or blocked circulation. Spider and varicose veins can happen anywhere in the body, but usually occur in the lower legs and feet, because of the added pressure from sitting and standing upright all day. Varicose and spider veins typically appear dark red, blue, or purple in color; varicose veins can appear to bulging beneath the skin, while spider veins will look more like webbing across the surface of the skin. Symptoms of spider and varicose veins can vary from mild irritation to severe pain (see left sidebar for more detail on symptoms). Spider and varicose veins are most common in women, especially older women, but everyone can be affected by vein abnormalities. Luckily for you, we have suggestions below for getting rid of your spider veins, and treating varicose veins and other vein abnormalities.
Treatment of Spider Veins
1)Promote healthy circulation in your legs to get rid of spider and varicose veins. Regular exercise (even just a short walk), loose clothing and low-heeled shoes, changing positions frequently and sitting with your legs uncrossed your legs (long periods of stasis and crossed legs can aggravate circulation problems), and elevating your legs above your heart when resting can all go a long way to improving your circulation and reducing the appearance and presence of spider and varicose veins in your legs.
2)Maintain a healthy weight to prevent and get rid of spider and varicose veins. Extra weight puts extra pressure on your legs, which makes healthy circulation harder for your body and can result in spider or varicose veins. Shedding those excess pounds with a healthy diet and exercise can reduce spider and varicose veins by relieving some of the pressure on your legs and increasing and improving circulation (see above).
3)Sclerotherapy is a very common treatment for spider and varicose veins in which a doctor injects small and medium affected veins with a solution that scars and closes the veins, forcing the body to redirect the circulating blood to healthy veins. After a few weeks the appearance of those affected veins should fade, and your discomfort relieved. Veins may need to be reinjected, but the outpatient procedure is fairly simple and relatively painless (no anesthesia is required).
4)Laser surgery is another common treatment for spider and varicose veins that uses intense bursts of light to fade the affected vein. Traditionally, laser surgery was used mostly for smaller veins in the face and upper body, but newly developed technology has made the procedure viable for veins in the legs. Because laser surgery is non-invasive, fast, and does not require an incision or needle, it is a popular choice for getting rid of spider and varicose veins. Multiple treatments may be necessary to fully “vanish” the veins.
5)Other, more traditional methods of surgery are also available to get rid of spider and varicose veins. These surgeries, including ambulatory phlebectomy, catheter-assisted procedures, endoscopic vein surgery, and vein stripping , are more invasive (they can require anesthesia), than sclerotherapy or laser surgery, but work effectively to remove or close the veins completely.
Complications of Spider (varicose) Veins
Gone untreated, spider and varicose veins can develop into more serious vein abnormalities and circulation problems. Other, serious, types of varicose veins include venous lakes, pooling blood in the veins of the face and neck; reticular veins, flat blue veins behind the knees; and telangiectases, reddish clusters of blood vessels on the face and upper body. Brown pigmentation can be a warning sign of skin ulcers, which can be the result of the increased pressure in the effected veins and needs immediate medical attention. Enlarged and swollen veins can cause your legs to swell also, and sudden leg swelling (with or without redness and irritation) can be indicative of a blood clot, a serious medical condition known as thrombophlebitis, which requires immedate attention.

Nancy asks…
Is there any way to get rid of spider veins or diminish them?
I am sixteen and have spider veins already. Is this normal? I thought you get them when you are much older. Where do they come from and for what reasons(pressure, etc…) Are there any ways that you can fade them away or treat them? Thanks for the advice.

rob answers:
Don’t worry, it’s completely normal. Visible veins have to do with genes and hereditary traits (usually from your mother’s side) There’s really no way to get rid of them, but you can use a couple methods to fade them a bit.
-Rub vinegar on the worst areas everyday, then go over the area with a moisturizing lotion
-Use self tanner. This helps hide them
-Cover up. Isn’t very permanent, but helps to make them appear less prominent if you want to wear shorts or a dress
-You can get them injected with saline, this is more expensive, about $200-$400
-Surgery. From what I’ve been told it is very painful, but the results are relatively permanent
Hope this helps

Robert asks…
How do get rid of Spider Veins and help my legs from falling asleep a lot?
I am 21 years old. I’m 5’7″ and weigh 130 which is what i am suppose to weigh. I have Spider Veins and my legs fall asleep a lot. Both are getting worse. I need to figure out what to do. What should I do.

rob answers:
You can’t do anything about the ones you have now unless you get laser surgery but you can help prevent more. You can wear compression stockings, don’t stand in one spot for long periods of time or sit for long periods of time. Do flexing exercises to increase circulation, quit smoking if you smoke and if your female talk to your doc about birth control alternatives if your using them.
You should talk to your doc anyway as there may be an underlying problem causing your poor circulation. Don’t take this to lightly. If you got a blood clot it could be deadly or at the very least painful (I know both by experience as I have protein C deficiency and have had DVT and surface clots).
Good luck and good health.

James asks…
how do I get my spider veins to go away?
I have all of these ridiculous little spider veins on my calf muscles and they only seem to be getting worse. I’m only 19 and I’m not overweight so I don’t understand why I am getting them. Anyone have any household remedies I could try? Or anything else?
Thank you ( :

rob answers:
If you look in your telephone book you will probably find a specialist that can get rid of them. We have a vein clinic in our area and a Specialist that does other things along with spider veins. She also uses lasers but its probably according to where the spider veins are located.
Sometimes it is covered by insurance but sometimes not as many times it is considered cosmetic problem.
My sister had it done on her legs and they just used tiny needles and injected saline (salt) solution into each tiny spider vein and they then disappear. She said it didn’t hurt it was just a tiny sting. She didn’t have to wrap her legs or do anything and wasn’t told to walk (You only do those things for VARICOSE VEINS which are the deep veins that stick out or look like lumps on your legs when you have them)
I also have spider veins and I was told by someone that I should dip a cloth in warmed vinegar and put it on the veins for about 15 minutes as that would make them disappear after a few weeks. I have way to many spider veins all over my thighs and legs to try this so I haven’t bothered. I would try it if I just had a few patches.
I was also told to take Vitamin E by mouth and to rub Vitamin E on the area as that would thin the blood out in that area and cause them to disappear. I have thin blood already so can’t use Vitamin E, but if I didn’t I would try it.
(CAUTION- I would try rubbing a tiny amount of the Vitamin E on the inside of one of your wrist for 24 hours to make sure you aren’t allergic to it before rubbing it on your veins as a few people are allergic to Vitamin E. If you notice redness, swelling, itching or blisters on your wrist, then you are allergic and shouldn’t use it and should wash it off with soap and water, dry the area and apply an over the counter antibiotic cream)
I am much much older than you and I have so many spider veins that I haven’t worn a swin suit in years and I love the water and live near the beach, so when I have the money I do want to have my veins done.
Good luck and hope some of these ideas work for you.

Helen asks…
What can I do about varicose and spider veins?
I’m 27 weeks pregnant and in the last month or so, my veins have been coming out really bad. I have varicose veins popping out all over my legs and spider veins like krazy everywhere, especially my legs. Is there anything I can do while I’m still pregnant to reduce these veins? They’re itchy as well.

rob answers:
Talk to your doctor about them, but the only treatment i’m aware of is laser surgery and you probably wouldn’t be able to have that done until you are through with the pregnancy.

Carol asks…
Does Vitamin K Cream really work to reduce dark eye circles and spider veins?

rob answers:
There are many causes of dark circles, from age, heredity, allergies, cold or sinus infection, bone structure and glasses which are not so commonly known.
If you would like to apply home remedies to reduce dark circles, here are some of my suggestions:
Buy a box of regular, old fashioned unflavored gelatin (e.g. Knox) from grocery store. Take a small cup or bowl and put in 1 teaspoon of the gelatin mix. Add one tablespoon of boiling water & stir for a minute. Test it on your wrist to make sure it is not too hot. Then, using a cotton ball, pat it under your eyes as you would an eye cream or gel. Go lie down and listen to some music, or take a bath & let it stay on for at least 30 minutes. Then just rinse it off.Gelatin is very high in Vitamin K & Biotin. It will not remove your dark circles on the first application (but you will notice a difference), but if you do it daily for a week, and then 2-3 times a week for maintenance, you should notice a drastic reduction in dark circles.

Avon spider vein cream?
I would like to know whether anyone has tried Avon’s spider vein cream. What are the pros and cons and was it worth the money

rob answers:
I purchased the trial sized bottle for my mother. It was only $5 and she is very pleased with it, its taken about 2 weeks of use for them to be unnoticable but hers were really bad.
It also is SPF 15 to protect your skin during the process.
The only con i know would be that you do not receive results immeaditly, it takes a few days, but it has to work over time for the results to last longer!
Here is the product description and ingredients list if you are interested:

Flaxelle spider Vein cream? Answer only if you have tried it.?
Hey, I have spider veins and I was wondering for anyone who has tried it, if it had work, it says it has to be used for at least 60 days and it dramatically reduces the appearance…. if it didnt work, could you recommend anything that can help?

rob answers:
NO cream can make those veins vanish. Don’t waste your $. Save up $100 and let a dermotologist inject saline into them. I just had mine done 2 weeks ago on my upper L leg. You have to wear a gauze pressure bandage for 3-5 days and it can take up to 2 months for the veins to completely vanish. But you should see a 75% improvement when you take off the bandage.

John asks…
spider veins!?
what is the difference of getting sclerotherapy done vs vitamin k cream? i know sclerotherapy is more effective, but i have very small spider veins in small areas of my legs. is it worth it to get the sclerotherapy? or should i invest in the vitamin k cream? how effective is it and will the veins return?

rob answers:
Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat blood vessels and malformations of the lymphatic system. A medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink.
Vitamin K cream helps to fade and clear the appearance of spider veins externally.
I would imagine that it would be cheaper to try the Vitamin K cream first epecially if you only have small spider veins. If after a couple of weeks it is not effective I would see a dermatologist. As with any therapy it is possible that the veins may return.
If you have any pain, fever, swelling, etc. Associated with the area of the spider veins I would seek immediate medical attention for the possibility of a blood clot formation. In those cases they may have to do what is called a doppler (which is like an ultrasound) on the veins to check for blood clots.
