I have horrible spider veins on my upper thigh that seem to have gotten progressively worse over the years… but I’m only 21!
Is there anything I can do to prevent this from worsening, and are there other treatments besides laser surgery?

Hi Jenni – I can totally relate to you! I am a 21 year old female and I’ve had spider veins since I was 14 but they haven’t gotten that bad until just recently. I went to the dermatologist last week and asked him if they were at the right size to be effectively removed. He told me they were worse than when he checked them last year so he told me he’d go ahead and give me a free treatment session to see how I like the results.
For me he did Saline Injections – they will usually cost around $250 per 15-minute session…. For a small patch on my leg it took about 10 minutes to complete. I have some on the outter side of my lower leg, and some on my upper thigh in the front. And recently my friends have been pointing them out which is embarrassing…so I KNEW they had gotten worse over the years and would only get bigger as I got older. I wanted to get rid of them but the money was my biggest drawback. However, my dermatologist was nice enough to do a test area and it’s been a week now and it’s still healing.
I have to tell you the saline injections do kind of hurt! I didn’t expect that much pain but you will experience some discomfort. On you, if he injects saline solution in your thigh, the muscle right below will feel like it’s cramping which is normal, but it hurts like hell lol… I don’t mean to scare you though. It feels like charlie horse I guess! I haven’t had my thigh worked on yet – only the area on my lower leg. So my WHOLE ankle was cramping and felt numb. But again – that’s normal. The injections DID sting some so expect that too. Honestly it is a bit painful but it is well worth it. I can already see 3 of the small purple veins gone but the major one is slightly gone. I think I have to go back and get "touch ups" to completley get rid of them. But yeah, next time I go back I will have to cough up $250 per session, but I think you and your dermatologist can work something out where you can make payments to them.
This is considered a cosmetic procedure, so insurance will not cover it. Which is retarded in my opinion because as these veins get bigger over time, they cause leg cramps and pain!
Talk to your dermatologist about this. He can look at the size of the veins and determine if they’re large enough for the needle to go through.
If I were you, I would definitely go with this procedure. If I’m not mistaken, the saline injections heal faster than laser. The day you get it done you will have lots of mini red dots on your leg from where the needle was, and your leg will feel tender for half a day. In a week the red marks will look better but you still won’t want to wear shorts because it’s still noticeable.
The best time to do this is now while the winter is still here. I’m going back in a few weeks to finish this so I’m good to go by spring break! I wish you luck and hopefully everything goes well for you! Sucks having grandma legs at such a young age!!! stupid genes. =-)
The source below provides some good information on spider veins.
As I understand it, spider veins are the result of broken capillaries.
You can prevent this by not wearing clothing that is too tight, not crossing your leg over your thighs for long periods of time, and by getting adequate exercise to promote good circulation.
You can help nourish your veins and get rid of the spider veins by splashing apple cider vinegar on them. With at least 96 vitamins and trace minerals, vinegar is a powerhouse of nourishment and can be absorbed past the top layer of skin to nourish the veins and capillaries.
Your body should reabsorb the blood from your current ones eventually. Especially if you do a three day fruit only diet.
Though it may be riske and off base, if you are romantically active, examine contact points during interludes and consider a variety of positions. To be blunt, hipbones, forceful thrusts, and friction could be breaking your capillaries. You said it is getting progressively worse, and that you are 21.
Good luck!
Check with other older women in your family, but I’ll bet you have a hereditary predisposition for varicose veins in your legs. It’s not uncommon.
Yes, there are alternatives to laser surgery. If the problem is simply blown out veins in the skin, then a vein doctor can inject them with a saline solution that will shrivel up the spider veins. However, it would be wise to see a vein doctor in any case – if the saphenous veins in your upper legs are already getting distended then you’ll want to have that treated. That will prevent a lot of discomfort, and worsening varicose veins, as you get older.
Good luck.
I work as a nurse and I am constantly on my feet. I had spider veins and had them treated with saline injections. This can be costly at about 250 – 300 dollars per session. I needed seven sessions on one leg and four on the other. The injections worked, but it has been about two years now and the spider veins are coming back. I have started using the product Venacura for about two months and have actually noticed my spider veins starting to fade. My legs also no longer swell up and feel better. Taking this supplement is alot cheaper and worth a try.
